American Roots that is for Recorder players. All the tunes on

The music for
both books (Violin and Recorder edition) is a cross section of popular instrumental
music from the English Colonies and early Federal America; divisions, shape
note hymns, country dances and cotillions. Here the music is arranged for
the recorder. When America was still a colony, music in the New World was
a welcome link to the settlers' original home; England, Holland, France,
Germany, Ireland and Scotland.
During the 18th century, as the colonies became
independent from England, their music reflected this new freedom in its unusual
textures and dissonances. Recorders and flageolets (the wooden predecessor
to the tin pennywhistle) were easily carried about and made excellent solo
instruments for both the new and old styles of music. They arrived in the
New World in pockets, packs and bundles.
Just published, arrangements of 36 tunes by 18th century blind harper Turlough O'Carolan of Ireland. Sue Richards has selected her favorites and arranged them for harp or piano. The list includes Fanny Poer, Bridget Cruise, and Si Bheag Si Mhor, as well as lesser-known beauties such as Kean O'Hara and Squire Woods Lamentation and several of the O'Connor family. They are in many keys, up to three flats and three sharps, and range from pretty easy to deceptively difficult. Also included in the $30 price is a CD of the tunes played at speed. Many of the tunes have been recorded by Sue and friends on the Maggies Music label.
A Celtic Fair by Maggie Sansone (Includes the CD!)
A Mel Bay publication, this edition includes Maggie Sansone's Celtic
Fair CD. An exciting collection of music transcribed from the music
heard on Maggie Sansone's recording A Celtic Fair. The selections
are jigs, reels and airs from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, France, and
early music from Playford and Renaissance dance manuscripts. The music is
presented first as the basic melody with chords and many of the tunes include
embellishments, ornamentation, flams, rolls, descending bass lines and interesting
chord substitutions to add spice to the arrangements. This tune book has something
for everyone from the basic tune for hammered dulcimer (and suitable for other
melody instruments) to intermediate and advanced arrangements for the hammered
dulcimer. Chords are provided.
Maggie Sansone has compiled, in one special collection, the most contemplative
melodies from her recording Celtic Meditations (MM302). A rich tapestry
of Celtic moods for gentle, quiet contemplation, the music is written in standard
notation in treble clef with chords and is also suitable for other melody “C” instruments
such as recorder, flute, mandolin or guitar. Includes liner notes, technique
suggestions, and tuning system diagrams. While based in the Celtic tradition,
Maggie's tune selections for this recording and book lend themselves to a more
slow relaxed performance and the music, although Celtic in origin, does express
a universal quality, transcending borders and will appeal to the highest qualities
in all of us with lightness and joy! 52 pages. Mel Bay Publications BK302

But certainly the arranging ideas go well beyond that level such that intermediate and even advanced players should find many ideas to explore for some time. There are a ton of ideas presented here. This CD is well-suited to an advanced beginning as long as they recognize that many of the ideas will take much time to master.

Celtic Tinwhistle - Key of D (Instrument)
It is impossible to hear a slow air played with depth of feeling on a Tinwhistle by a true Celt, without being drawn into, and sharing the emotions expressed by the player. Each of the Celtic nations has its own instrumental tradition and each claims their right to specific instruments. The Scots will assert that the bagpipes are their property; the Welsh the harp. The Irish claim the Uillean pipes as their own. One instrument played by all, and adopted by all is the Tinwhistle.
When Robert Clarke invented the Tinwhistle in 1843, little did he know that it would become the perfect wind instrument to be played universally in all the Celtic lands. It can be heard in concert halls, broadcasts, churches and above all, especially in Ireland, in the pubs. It is easy to learn to play, inexpensive and can be conveniently carried so as to be available for performances on all occasions.
Supplied in the key of 'D', this traditionally looking CELTIC Tinwhistle is finished in green with Celtic knot logo, comes attractively packaged in a box with tune sheet and fingering chart.
