"The Bear Dance"A Swedish Tune with Two Variations for Hammered Dulcimer (Intermediate level)by Maggie Sansone
I recorded this tune on hammered dulcimer on "A Traveler's Dream" (MM110). The track features hammered dulcimer and with Al Petteway on acoustic guitar, Andrea Hoag on fiddle, and Bobby Read on clarinet, accordion, electric bass and percussion.It’s a medley that includes two versions of "Bear Dance" and an improvisation. The basic versions of the two tunes are included in the Mel Bay Publication Maggie's Big Book of Celtic Tunes. For this article, I have created a new arrangement for the "Bear Dance #1 that adds embellishments that enhance the melody's haunting quality and is both a challenge and fun to play too! I've also transcribed the improvisation that is heard on the recording and will call it "Bear Dance Improvisation."

About The Bear Dance (Björndansen)
The Swedish "bear dance" is an athletic dance traditionally performed by a pair of men who act out the power and grace of the bear. I learned these tunes from Swedish fiddler Andrea Hoag, who traces the bear dances (two variants) to Dalarna, Sweden's "folklore province." In the deep woods of Dalarna, the bear is called "Twelve Men in the Woods."

Ken returned from Kentucky Music Week and will be teaching/performing at lots more music camps which includes Swannanoa Gathering near Asheville, NC and Meadowlark (ME). This fall,Ken will teach 27 students from 14 states over two weeks and Ken's invite says "Spend a week in Sandbridge, VA at a large 10 bedroom (8.5 baths, hot tub) beach house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
In the works for Ken: Ken and Scottish fiddler, Elke Baker,hope to record a CD in the fall and after 25 years, Ken and Chris Norman are releasing their debut album Daybreak as a CD.

The most famous was Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) who traveled the Irish countryside, composing over 200 melodies that blend traditional Irish folk music with the style of his contemporaries Vivaldi and Corelli. Honored with the title “Chief Musician of Ireland,” he left his music as a gift to the world--elegant baroque style melodies, lively jigs and dreamy laments. Carolan continues to inspire musicians to this day. This recording presents Carolan’s musical gifts in a chamber music style performed on Celtic harp, Irish flute, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, viola da gamba, guitar and piano.

The summer solstice occurs around June 21, 2009 and is the longest day of the year. It's a time for celebration among lovers of Celtic music and mythology.Sol + stice derives from Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December.Maggie Sansone's CD A Traveler's Dream includes a music called: The Lughnasa Set: The Green Fields of Woodford / Summertime / A Morning in Summer. About this track, from the liner notes ...[Lughnasa] features a set of jigs to celebrate the ancient Celtic summer festival of Lughnasa (loo-nah-sa). The first jig is from East Galway in Ireland, learned from the playing of flute player Jack Coen. The second is from Northumberland. The third, from O’Neill’s Music of Ireland, joins the dulcimer and its family of mallet-struck instruments in a sunny rhythmic accompaniment.
